How to Prepare Furniture for Movers
The sofa is often easier to measure than the turn at the top of the stairs. Prepare the route as carefully as the furniture, especially in a walk-up or a house with basement storage.
The short answer
Make a list of large furniture, measure difficult doorways and tell the mover which pieces may need disassembly. Empty fragile or loose contents, keep hardware labeled with its furniture, and agree on wrapping and preparation before moving day. Ask about unusually heavy, valuable or delicate items individually.
Measure the part that could stop the move
Record the furniture’s height, width and depth, then the narrowest doorway, stair landing or elevator opening on its route. Photograph the tight turn from both sides. Note removable legs or sections, but let the moving team decide what needs to come apart.
Include the destination. A desk that leaves a ground-floor office easily may be difficult to place upstairs in the new home. Do not wait until unloading to explain that the intended room is through a smaller doorway.
Decide who takes each piece apart
Ask about beds, tables, modular shelving and other pieces before the estimate is final. Some furniture needs its assembly instructions or special tools. Send the product information if you have it and identify any existing damage or loose fittings.
If you disassemble something yourself, photograph the connections first. Put the hardware in a labeled bag and agree on where that bag will travel. A bag taped carelessly to a finished surface can leave marks, so use a separate clearly labeled container when appropriate.
Clear the contents and the walking route
Remove glass shelves, loose objects and items that can shift inside furniture unless the team advises otherwise. Ask whether drawers should be emptied for each piece. A light bedside drawer and a heavy dresser full of books should not be treated as the same load.
Keep the path clear of boxes, cords and rugs that could catch a foot or a dolly. Tell the crew about pets and children in the home. Leave packing tools and the day’s essentials somewhere they will not be loaded accidentally.
Agree on protection and placement
