How to Plan a Move Between Closing Dates

A closing date on a calendar does not tell the crew when the front door will open. Before you book the truck, establish when you can leave one property and enter the next.

The short answer

Plan the move around confirmed possession and access at each property. If the dates leave a gap, arrange storage or another agreed destination, price each moving stage and keep daily essentials with you. Tell the moving team which dates are firm and which depend on closing or key handover.

Separate paperwork dates from access times

Ask the people handling your transaction to confirm possession and key handover. Record the date and time for each property, plus the contact who can notify you of a change. Let your legal or real-estate advisers resolve the transaction terms; the mover needs the resulting access plan.

If access is not yet confirmed, say so when requesting an estimate. Describe the possible dates and the point at which you expect an answer. A tentative move request should not quietly become a promise that the property will be ready.

Choose a destination for any gap

If belongings cannot go directly to the new home, arrange a suitable storage facility or another approved destination. Confirm opening hours, gate access, unit size and loading arrangements. Tell Major Movers whether you need transport, loading or unloading at each stage.

Do not assume a loaded truck can stay overnight or that the mover operates a storage facility. Those are separate service questions. Obtain a written plan showing where the belongings will go, who holds them and what is booked for the later delivery.

Pack for living outside the main shipment

Keep clothing, medication, chargers, work items, documents and pet supplies with you for the gap. Pack more than an overnight bag if the dates remain uncertain. Identify furniture or equipment that needs to remain accessible in storage.

Label the storage inventory and save a copy outside the unit. If some items go directly to the new home and others go to storage, use clear destination labels. Give the crew the unloading order before the vehicle is packed.

Agree on how changes will be handled

Ask each provider about rescheduling, extra trips and delays before you accept a booking. Save the actual terms rather than relying on a general website description. If a date changes, contact the mover, storage provider and building manager promptly.

Update mail and essential services around the confirmed move. USPS forwarding is one step; employers, insurers and other important senders may need direct updates. Keep the latest contact list with you so a schedule change does not get lost in packed paperwork.

Before you confirm the move

  • Confirm possession and keys at both ends.
  • Arrange storage separately if needed.
  • Price and schedule every moving stage.
  • Keep essentials and provider contacts with you.

Common questions

General guidance. Your own route, date and access still need confirming directly.

Can the moving truck hold my belongings overnight?

Ask before booking. Do not assume overnight holding is available or included in a local-moving estimate.

Does Major Movers arrange my closing date?

No. Resolve possession and access with the people handling the property transaction, then share the confirmed plan with the movers.

Can I book two separate moving days?

Ask the team to quote and confirm each stage, with the inventory, addresses and access for both.

What if the purchase is delayed?

Contact every affected provider as soon as you know. Ask for a revised written plan and the applicable scheduling terms.
