How far in advance should you book movers in New Haven County?

The end of the month is the crunch

Most leases in New Haven, Hamden, West Haven and the surrounding towns end on the last day of a month and start on the first of the next. That puts a large share of every month's moves into the same three or four days, and the Saturday inside that window is the single most requested date on any mover's calendar.

If your lease ends on the 31st, the easy improvement is to ask your landlord or building whether you can move a few days early or hand over the keys a day late. A move on the 27th competes with far fewer people than one on the 31st, and the crew that shows up is not coming off four days of month-end jobs.

The university calendar sits on top of that

Yale in New Haven, Quinnipiac in Hamden and Southern Connecticut State University all move students in during late August and out again in May. Those are not only student moves. Faculty, staff, graduate students and the families who rent near the campuses all turn over on the same schedule, and the rental housing around them turns over with them.

The result is that late August is the busiest stretch of the year for movers in the county, and the middle of May is the second. If your move lands in either, treat it as a month-end date even if it is not one, and book as far ahead as you can. If you have any flexibility, the weeks either side of those peaks are much easier.

Weekends, weekdays and the quiet months

Saturdays go first in every month. Sundays next. Weekday dates, especially mid-week and mid-month, are the ones that stay open longest and are the easiest to fit around a building's elevator schedule or a landlord's inspection.

Winter is quieter. Fewer people choose to move between December and February, so a January date is usually easier to get, though it brings its own planning (see the winter moving guide). Spring and early summer sit in between: busy, but not the August squeeze.

What to do if the date is not fixed yet

Call anyway. A closing that might slip or a lease that is still being negotiated is normal, and a company that does a lot of local work is used to holding a likely date and adjusting it. What helps is telling the company the range you are working in and which end of it is more likely, then confirming as soon as the date firms up.

Booking late is not hopeless

Dates open up. Closings slip, people change plans, and a mover that was full for a Saturday two weeks ago may have a slot again. If you are inside the window where you would normally expect everything to be gone, call and ask rather than assuming. Be ready to take a weekday, an early start, or a date a day or two off the one you wanted.
